Darjeeling Second Flush 1997
Second Flush season, in Darjeeling (NE India) produces some of the worlds finest, most sought-after teas. Before the arrival of the June monsoons, the Darjeeling District gets a brief second set of showers in May, which kicks off the second flush season. The first flush, typically, ends in late April. In 1997 this time frame of Mother Nature was upset by severe weather (see article on First Flush Darjeelings). The second flush season has, indeed, produced some excellent teas but at considerably higher than usual prices due to a much smaller availability. The leaves had an excessive amount of moisture leading, generally, to a decrease in quality. This mishap was not district-wide but rather, regional within the district of Darjeeling.
Second flush Darjeeling teas are renowned for their Muscatel characteristicspossessing a well-developed flavor, sweet and smooth and with an absolutely remarkable taste. The most prized second flush are similar to vintage wines and command very, very high prices.
We have purchased some of these prized teas but have had to pay substantially higher prices than we had anticipated (see "The Tea Shop" web site). As they are posted on "The Tea Shop" web site, we invite you to order them but since they are in very limited supply I cannot guarantee delivery and because of our worldwide readership I feel they will be depleted quickly.
